Ethics and End of Life (VTAS) Symposium

Date: October 12, 2018

Time: 1pm-4pm

Location: Mount Mary University 2900 North Menomonee River Pkwy Milwaukee, WI 53222. The presentation will be located at Stiemke Hall on the 2nd floor of Notre Dame Hall.

Cost: $30.00 (This includes 3.0 hours of CEU’s)

Topic:  This training will focus on Ethics and End of Life (VTAS). Topics that will be discussed include: Medical aspects of EOL and best practices, Hospice care for DDID in CBRFS and AFHS, Palliative versus Hospice care. The speakers will also discuss effective planning with formal supports and families for end of life. Communication and inclusiveness for people with DD in planning and navigating EOL related issues also a general overview of guardianship and process of becoming a guardian.

Your Presenters:   

Speaker 1) Toni Kesler RN, MSN, FNP, ACHPN: Toni currently works for VITAS Healthcare which serves people with serious illnesses. They provide hospice care and palliative services to provide comfort to patients and preserve dignity in the face of terminal illness.  She has been involved with Honoring Choices project through the Medical Society of Wisconsin.  She has taught Respecting Choices – certifying facilitators to have First Steps conversations and developing an Honoring Choices Document for advanced directives.

Speaker 2) Bonnie Helfgott Krisztal: Bonnie is the founder and developer of Krisztal Law, LLC. They provide legal counsel services for health care clients; Advise clients on regulatory and operational matters; Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement; HIPAA; fraud and abuse rules; employee matters; patient care issues; and, third-party reimbursement. They also advise clients on Elder Law matters, probate, estate planning and guardianship.

Speaker 3) TBA: A social worker will discuss effective planning with formal supports and families for end of life, communication and inclusiveness for people with DD  in planning and navigating EOL related issues and EOL issues for parents of people with DDID with a focus on continuity of care and planning.
